about

In June of 2022, Trickster played for three weeks at SEEDS, a small venue in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. To get into the frame of mind for this recording you might imagine the scene as you arrive in the neighborhood. You walk down a typical street full of brownstones and shops, seeing people hanging around everywhere on stoops and curbs trying to beat the early evening heat. After some looking, you hear music coming from behind a glass storefront door thatʼs ajar. A young fellow invites you in and you step into a room about as big as a two-car garage, finding a spot in the crowd of people sweating it out in the company of four musicians lined up on a brick wall, clearly working hard but having a good time.

After a week or so of these nights, it became clear that something special was happening, so I asked Anthony Tidd to bring in his recording rig to capture it. I had vinyl production in mind, so we played chunks that lasted about fifteen minutes to fit the sides. This album is from the last few days of the gig and features a mix of songs from previous albums and a couple of standards. Youʼll hear the usual things from live recordings - street noise, people rustling around, audience reactions. Youʼll also hear a band in the middle of the creative process, working out ideas in front of people and reaching for something new. I sincerely hope you enjoy the show.

about

Trickster Brooklyn, New York

“Trickster, a four-piece band led by guitarist Miles Okazaki, is best understood in both cerebral and visceral terms. On the one hand, it’s a delivery system for some proudly intricate and idiosyncratic compositions, the byproduct of a deeply rigorous mind. On the other hand, it’s a go-for-broke quartet, capable of shifting the ground underfoot without ever losing its balance.” – Nate Chinen ... more
